Milo and his father then talked to each other while waiting for the Whilforber Whirlwind to surface again, each commenting on the guests and how they had expected a vacation. Vinge could have known that Greenglass House did not have many guests at that time of year. Vinge did not notice, as he was also baffled by the second ringing of the bell. The bell then rang again, and Milo blurted a surprised comment, rude because it sounded like he did not want Mr. Vinge's orange and purple socks, commenting that Milo had won a brownie sundae. Milo guessed that it was a guy with a cargo of paperwhites, and green and pink striped stockings. While they waited for the guest to arrive, they guessed who it would be. Being surprised made him uneasy at the best of times. Milo lived at Greenglass House for as long as he could remember.Īll his life, ever since he was really small, Milo had been very bothered by sudden changes of plan. His mother made a patchwork quilt before she knew which baby they were getting, and Milo still had it by the age of twelve.
